The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
